Overview

At only six years old, Khao Bun has already experienced a childhood marked by instability, poverty, and uncertainty. Instead of worrying about school, friends, and play, many of his days are shaped by whether there will be enough food to eat and whether his family can afford life’s most basic necessities.

Growing up in one of Thailand’s poorest regions, Khao Bun faces challenges that no child should have to endure. Yet despite the hardship that surrounds him, he remains a gentle, cheerful little boy whose resilience offers hope for a brighter future.

Family

Khao Bun lives with his mother in extremely difficult circumstances. His father is a small-time drug dealer who is repeatedly in and out of prison, leaving the family without stability or reliable financial support.

His mother struggles with drug addiction but works whenever she can in an effort to provide for her children. Despite her determination, the income she earns is often not enough to cover even the family’s most basic needs. Every day is a struggle to find enough money for food, clothing, school supplies, and essential household expenses.

There are times when meals must be skipped because there is simply not enough food. New clothes are almost unheard of, and everyday items that many families take for granted remain beyond their reach. Poverty has become a constant part of Khao Bun’s childhood.

Hobbies & Dreams

Like many boys his age, Khao Bun loves running, playing football with other children, and exploring the outdoors. He is curious about the world around him and enjoys learning whenever he has the opportunity.

He dreams of becoming a police officer when he grows up. He wants to help keep children safe and protect families from the dangers that have affected his own life. It is a dream inspired by the hope that one day other children will not have to grow up surrounded by fear, poverty, and uncertainty.

With regular meals, access to education, and a safe environment, Khao Bun can begin building the future he dreams about instead of simply trying to survive each day.

Risks

Without ongoing support, Khao Bun faces numerous risks associated with growing up in chronic poverty, including:

  • Malnutrition and poor physical development due to inadequate nutrition.
  • Irregular school attendance or dropping out because of financial hardship.
  • Increased risk of neglect resulting from parental substance abuse.
  • Exposure to criminal activity and unsafe environments.
  • Poor mental and emotional wellbeing caused by prolonged instability.
  • Increased likelihood of remaining trapped in the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
  • Higher risk of exploitation, child labour, or involvement in harmful activities as he grows older.

Early intervention through nutrition, education, healthcare, and family support can significantly reduce these risks and improve long-term outcomes.

Are currently out of school. Most come from low-income families, rural communities, migrant households, or families facing significant social challenges. Healthcare & Nutrition Checks

Regular check-ups, essential medicines, vaccinations, and emergency medical assistance.

Education & Training

Eliminating the financial burdens that force parents to pull children from school and into dangerous informal work.

Healthy & Nutrious Food

Therapeutic food and targeted nutritional support to prevent malnutrition, which severely affects cognitive development and makes children easy targets for exploitation.

New Cothing & Shoes

Covering hidden school costs, including mandatory uniforms, sturdy shoes, and learning supplies, so children stay in the classroom instead of fields or factories.

Prevention From Child Labour Expolitation

Stopping exploitation before it starts. By removing the financial emergencies that bankrupt rural families, we eliminate the desperate conditions where children are traded for debt or forced into hazardous day labor.

Prevention From Abuse & Child Sex Trafficking

Safe environments, identity documentation support, and tracking to prevent children from being targeted by labor or sex traffickers.

The poverty rate is 4.2% for people without a completed education, falling to 3.0% for those who finish school.
